HOW DO OUR ARTWORKS GET THEIR NAMES?

Origina abstract painting with book on top - Kate Murphy's 'You're Not Listening'

How do our artworks get their names? It's a good question.

The inspiration behind each and every painting are the books we use to create them. Each title is an expression of the ideas and concepts from the books and a pointer to the lessons we want to share.

Our intention is to get you curious about the artwork, the idea beahind it - and on a good day - encourage you to make a small change, or do a small thing in your life - that makes it better.

At ABSTRAKTOLOGIE, we think there are three layers to an artwork:

  • Aesthetic - you love the way it looks and makes you feel
  • Informative - you learn something new (e.g. discover a new book, idea or concept) through getting to know the art
  • Transformational - you make a decision, introduce a habit, take on a bit of learning that makes your life better

Art is personal. Many people won't even like the art on this website. That's okay. That's part of the joy of humanity's diversity. But some of you will love the art. Some of you will read about the artwork (starting with the title). Some of you might go listen to a podcast, check out the book, discover something new that's interesting to you. And some of you (we're whittling down the crowd here) - might decide to do something with that information that changes your life in a good way. Maybe for that day. Maybe for longer.

That's our intention.
And that's how we name our paintings.

Take the artwork above. It's called 'Listen to Yourself' based on Chapter 11 from Kate Murphy's book: 'You're Not Listening'. The piece focuses on the lessons from that chapter. It asks you to think about your own inner voice. What does it say? Does it encourage you or exasperate you? Does it criticize or complement? Does it help or hinder you?

The purpose of this painting is to get you to think about the value of listening to yourself. The zig-zagging brushstrokes represent these internal thought patterns. Listening to yourself is learning to trust your intuition and instincts. It's about understanding yourself better, getting to know your dreams, your fears and your true values.

If you value listening to yourself and want a reminder to do that daily, this is the painting for you.
