What inspired the artwork?

In her book 'Time to Think' (2011), Nancy Kline describes her belief that everyone she meets has something interesting and important to say.

However, we rarely listen to people fully. We live in a world where we interrupt, listen half-heartedly and rush to solve problems and move on. We don't listen to what people are really thinking and feeling. Our conversations are superficial and unproductive. It's no way to live life well.

Instead, Nancy asks us to 'listen with fascination'. This means listening with curiosity and without interruption (easier said than done - we know).

This painting is a lesson in how to pause, put away your distractions and listen to others. And we mean REALLY listen. Give someone the gift of being listened to and hear what really matters to them.  

Living well is listening without judgement, listening so that the other person can think for themselves. Let this artwork remind you to create that space in your conversations at home and work. Your relationships and your life will be better for it.
