What inspired the artwork?
It's inspired by Kate Murphy's book 'You're Not Listening' - and the chapter on 'The Speech-Thought Differential'. It's about appreciating the speed at which people speak and the rate at which we think. If you've ever caught yourself having a conversation in your head, while you 'listen' to someone, you know what we mean.
This artwork is part of a pair (bought separately or together) titled: Talking Like a Tortoise, Thinking like a Hare. It's knowing we talk at an average of 120-150 words per minute and think at 400+ words per minute. That's a lot of free capacity for our mind to wander.
This painting represents the Hare. The lesson in living well is a reminder to SPEED UP your listening. Sounds strange, but when you focus more on the person speaking you can ask yourself: What are they are saying? Perhaps what they are not saying?
When you stop tuning out while listening, the benefits are profound. Listening deeply requires effort, but when you are fully engaged in the conversation, you get so much more from it. Better listening improves relationships, reduces miscommunication and helps us have conversations rather than 'who-can-shout-the-loudest' arguments.
