What inspired the artwork?

Another artwork painted in response to psychologist Dr. Rob Yeung's book: 'Confidence' (2008).

On page 5, Dr. Yeung defines confidence as 'the ability to take appropriate and effective action, however challenging it may feel at the time'. This philosophy became the central creative constraint behind the painting process for this piece.

Every new layer (and the artwork is made up of approximately 15 to 20 layers) was added with confidence. Each selection of colour was deliberate, the uneasy feelings of painting another layer were embraced. I constantly questioned myself: Will these marks ruin the composition? Will these colours ruin the painting?

This artwork is an exercise in taking short-term action (each layer) and achieving a long-term goal (the final painting). If you need to remind yourself to keep going, to take action - not because you feel comfortable, but because you aren't feeling comfortable - this is the piece for you. Grow your confidence.
